Our topic for the summer term is ‘Your Country Needs You!’ which is based all around the history of World War II. During lessons we will study how the war started, who was involved and the famous faces of WW2 including Winston Churchill and Adolf Hitler. Children will lots of opportunities to learn about key events such as The Blitz, rationing and evacuation. We will link all our computing work to our history and the children will work each week towards a presentation on WW2. This topic is always a favourite of the children (and staff!) and promises to inspire the children in all curriculum areas.
Reminders and Rountines
- Have a named water bottle
- Wear correct uniform (in line with school policy) that is clearly labelled with name and that is suitable for the weather type
- Read daily at home
- Practise multiplication tables weekly (including the division facts)
- Complete weekly homework (set on a Friday and handed in the following Friday via Google Classroom)
- Children will have a chance to change their reading book each week, as and when they finish. Reading records will also be collected in on Fridays
PE will take place on:
5 AT - Monday and Friday
5 KGKB - Monday and Wednesday
Children should come to school in their PE kit on these days.

In class we use a variety of concrete (physical resources) and pictorial resources to support our learning in Mathematics. When learning about decimals, we used Base 10 equipment and Place Value Counters to represent various decimals and develop our knowledge of decimals further.
Year 5 Mathematics PhotosYear 5 are working towards achieving an Arts Award as part of the Artsmark Project. In order to achieve this, the children have needed to complete various tasks over the Summer Term as part of The Arts. Some of the tasks have included drama and role play, listening to and researching various music and evaluating its purpose and impact, playing instruments and creating art through different mediums. The children have enjoyed the wide variety of tasks that they have engaged in.

Year 5 spent time exploring some WW2 artefacts. These included: An RAF flying jacket, a decommissioned grenade, a sweetheart bracelet, a battle ship replica and household items such as dried food tins and lanterns.

Year 5 have been taking part in a special Artsmark Explore project with Mrs Black. All the work is based on 'Lockdown and our home' and promotes the children's wellbeing through artwork and music.

The children in Year 5 designed and made their own Volcano Sculpture as part of our Geography topic this half term. To tie in with Arts Week and the theme of 'Water', we have thought about different volcanoes that are partly underwater. The children enjoyed using paper mache to build their volcano and secure its shape.

As part of our focus on Mountains and Volcanoes, the children have been working hard to plan a route for the emergency services to rescue an injured hiker who is stranded on a mountain. We had to think carefully about which route we would take and any obstacles that we might face on the way. The children worked in pairs to plan their route and shared their route with the class at the end of the lesson. We have put some pictures of this work in our gallery.
In English, Year 5 have been studying the poem 'Flanders Field' by John McCrae. Here are our performances of the poem:
