British Values at Glory Farm Primary School

The DfE have reinforced the need “to create and enforce a clear and rigorous expectation on all schools to promote the fundamental British values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty and mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs.” These British Values are intentionally woven into every aspect of our school, some examples are reflected below:


Children, parents and staff have many opportunities for their voices to be heard at Glory Farm Primary School. Democracy is central to how we operate.

All children have the opportunity for their voices to be heard when participating in class meetings which then feed into whole school changes. Children also have opportunities to air their opinions and ideas through our Communication Team, Action Teams and regular pupil questionnaires which focus on subject issues and bullying.

Children have many opportunities to discuss and debate current affairs using Picture News resources. Within class, children are exposed to an image linked to a current news story. These images display a thought-provoking question which encourage our children to voice their inspirations and passions. Every few weeks, classes take it in turns to display some of their opinions and ideas on our ‘What do you think?’ display board. Through these resources, our children develop their confidence, independence, respect and resilience as well as their democratic skills.

Children are always listened to by adults and are taught to listen carefully to each other, respecting the right of every individual to have their opinions and their voices heard. Staff act as role models for this. We encourage our children to take ownership of not only their school, but also of their own learning and progress. This encourages a heightened sense of both personal and social responsibility and is demonstrated daily by our children.

Parents’ opinions are always welcomed at GFPS through methods such as questionnaires, surveys at parents’ evenings and opportunities to comment on whole school matters. Parents also have many opportunities to have their voice heard and implement changes through our Parent Teacher Association (PTA).

The Rule Of Law

The importance of laws, whether they be those that govern the class, the school, or the country, are consistently reinforced at GFPS. Our children are taught from the Early Years the rules of the school. We have high expectations for all children, and this is reflected in our Behaviour Policy.

Our school follows a token system focused on being ‘ready’, ‘safe’ and ‘respectful’ and these values are embedded in our everyday work. Children work as class teams to collect value tokens and these are collected into whole-school jars. Once a full jar is achieved, the whole school gains a reward. These rewards are voted for by our children.

Each class discusses right from wrong and sets their own class rules that are clearly understood by all and seen to be necessary to ensure that every class member is able to learn in a safe and ordered environment. These rules are linked to the Code of Conduct.

Through our school gatherings and Life Education (RSE & PSHE) children are taught how to earn trust and respect and are supported to develop a strong sense of morality; knowing right from wrong and doing the right thing even when it’s difficult.

Our children are taught the value and reasons behind rules and laws, that they govern and protect us, the responsibilities that this involves and the consequences when laws are broken. These values are reinforced in different ways, for example: visits from authorities such as the Police and Fire Service, cycling proficiency lessons where children understand the rules of the road and during Religious Education, when rules for different faiths are considered.

Individual Liberty

At GFPS, children are actively encouraged to make choices, knowing that they are in a safe and supportive environment. As a school, we provide boundaries for our children to make choices safely through the provision of a safe environment and planned curriculum. Children are encouraged to know, understand and exercise their rights and personal freedoms and are advised how to exercise these safely. For example, through e-safety, gatherings and outside organisations, including the Police and Fire Service, as well as through our Life Education (RSE & PSHE) curriculum. We celebrate each other’s achievements whether that be in or out of school through our weekly certificates and our whole school achievements display.

A large part of our behaviour policy and application of sanctions is based upon choice. Teachers apply the language of choice in their classrooms.

Mutual Respect

Our school ethos and behaviour policy are based around core values of ‘respect’ and ‘responsibility’. Through our school’s values, Life Education, gatherings and lessons, our children are taught: to respect each other, to be cooperative and collaborative, to be supportive and to look for similarities while celebrating and understanding differences.

We have high expectations about the way children conduct themselves. Respect is referred to regularly by teachers regarding behaviour in lessons with practical examples given and adults throughout the school modelling, demonstrating and promoting respect for others.

Tolerance Of Those Of Different Faiths And Beliefs

Our central aim to 'prepare children for the future' drives us towards ensuring that our children can live and work alongside people from all backgrounds and cultures. This will be particularly necessary in a future where, due to technological advances, the 'world is a smaller place.'

Our children know and understand that it is expected that respect is shown to everyone and to everything, whatever differences we may have. Children learn that their behaviour choices influence their own rights and those of others. All members of the school community are encouraged to treat each other with respect.

Our gatherings and discussions within RE and Life Education lessons allow our children the chance to understand and build knowledge of the beliefs and faiths of others. Children also develop an awareness and appreciation for other cultures through fiction texts and in The Arts by considering cultures from other parts of the world. Members of different faiths and religions are encouraged to share their knowledge to enhance learning within classes and the school.

Home Debate Club

Home Debate Club is a weekly, guided, 10 minute online activity that allows our families to participate in a national debate. It is for children between the ages of 6-12 and aims to help young people feel like their voice matters and improve their oracy skills. A new debate goes live every Monday and runs for a week. It is completely online and mobile friendly, so it can be accessed using phones or computers - you do not need to use pens or paper.
